Douglas Smith: The Rhodes University u21 rugby side lost their opening match of the season on Wednesday night against local club Gardens by a narrow margin of 19-15. It was an unfortunate start for the Rhodes youngsters, but perhaps a lesson in taking chances.

The entire match was marred by poor decision-making and sloppy handling from both sides. The early exchanges saw the ball bounce around the field in ridiculous fashion. From Gardens attempting cross-kicks inside their own 22 metre area on three occasions to Rhodes throwing passes to no-one in particular, the opening 20 minutes of the game were a poor display of the sport.
